Good article in today's Sunday Times about a new book on the Cork music scene in the eighties. Article includes quotes from Cathal and a few other luminaries. Worth checking out.

Just finished reading this. It's pretty good as an overview of the scene from the seventies to now but doesn't try to go into any great analytical detail or anything. There's some wonderful stuff about the whole atmosphere in Cork in the late seventies and Cathal and Sean's contributions are great. I didn't know they were both in a band called The Constant Reminders which was a surprise, plus the fact the name Microdisney was just wordplay rather than anything meaningful. There's also a great bit about how the angry Microdisney pulled up another band who were using the name Belsen in that boringly obvious shock-value way some punk bands did and telling them it was offensive! There's a little about how those great Whelan shows came about in 1997 with the Nine Wassies from Bannie.

Reading how much of a struggle it was in the early days it does make you think how lucky in many ways Cathal was to get to make so much music. I was struck that he was pretty much the only one from that scene who went to make record after record, all of them amazing, while most of the others disappeared or stopped or, in some cases, died. By the end it's quite wonderful to see his solo records listed and seeing him still producing work.

Recommended.

I made the Constant Reminders discovery a couple of years ago and pointed the way to an interesting site. http://cathalcoughlan.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=354
I was also very surprised that I'd never heard mention of the pre- Microdisney band before. The aforementioned site seems to be unavailable which is a shame as it was quite detailed.

I spoke too soon. It does still exist.

Interestingly (if you're a bit anal, like me) The Constant reminders preceded Micro-Disney as opposed to Microdisney.

Giordai was there providing a Microdisney link. Mick Lynch / Ricky Dineen / Get that Monster Off The Stage played as did the Vital Spark and John Spillane. Mark McAvoy, Morty McCarthy and Rory Gallagher's brother gave short speeches. Good cross section of about 40 years of Cork music in attendance.

Here's an updated link to Constant Reminders / Microdisney - I think the site has recently had a bit of an overhaul :
